Do I need a visa to move from Australia to America?
Yes. Australian passport holders cannot move to the USA without the appropriate visa. The type of visa you need depends on your reason for relocating and length of stay. It’s essential to confirm your visa requirements before planning your move.
If you hold multiple passports, you may be subject to different rules or visa requirements.
Can I drive in the USA with my Australian licence?
You can drive on your Australian licence temporarily in many US states. However, some states require an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in Australia. It’s a good idea to check the regulations in your destination, including how long you can legally drive without transferring your licence.
What items can’t I bring into America from Australia?
Prohibited items vary by state, but generally include certain foods, plant products, and hazardous materials. High-value household items that are less than one year old (furniture, carpets, art, books, and furnishings) may be subject to import duties. Your KEYS consultant will provide a complete list and help you comply with all relevant customs regulations.
How long does shipping from Australia to America take?
Transit times vary based on your shipping method and destination. Sea freight usually takes 6 to 12 weeks, while air freight is faster but more expensive. We’ll provide a clear timeline and updates along the way.
Can you organise storage in the USA?
Yes. We can arrange temporary storage through our global partners, or hold your shipment securely in Perth until you’re ready. We can even organise staggered or split shipping if you need more time to explore a few different destinations in the USA.
Do I need transit insurance?
Yes. Transit insurance protects you against losses in the rare case of delays, damage, or loss during the journey from Australia to America. Please see the product disclosure statement for more information about transit insurance.
However, if one of our international shipping partners becomes insolvent, you are automatically covered against loss through our Harmony Relocation Network membership. KEYS is the only WA-owned Harmony member.
