Lifestyle
The first thing you’ll notice about moving to Perth is the pace of life slows down compared to bigger cities like Sydney or Melbourne.
We’re not in a rush here. It is still a capital city, but we like to slow down and appreciate quality time with family and friends.
-
Socialising
Perth isn’t a party 24/7, but it’s far from a sleepy city. Most people enjoy the balance of taking it easy during the week and catching up with friends on the weekend.
There’s always something happening in Perth. Check out guides like Destination Perth, Perth Is Ok, and The Urban List to see what’s on around town.

Working
Western Australia’s economy stayed strong during the pandemic, so there’s no shortage of work for anyone moving to Perth. The State Treasury estimates more than 30,000 people will find jobs in 2021-22.
The resources sector remains the state’s biggest employer. But Perth is an innovative city. We need all kinds of skilled and experienced people to continue building and diversifying our economy.

Where to live in Perth
Inner-city
Inner-city areas like the CBD, Northbridge, Subiaco, Leederville, West Perth and East Perth are ideal for anyone looking to live in the heart of the action and close to work.
Suburbs
As one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas, moving to Perth offers plenty of choices when it comes to living in the suburbs.
Suburbs close to the city like Highgate, Mt Lawley, Crawley and Burswood are always buzzing with activity. Meanwhile, coastal addresses like North Fremantle, Cottesloe, City Beach and Scarborough offer proximity to the world’s best coastline.
Plus, Perth is one of Australia’s most affordable capitals. Whether you live near the coast in Ridgewood or Clarkson, near nature in the Perth hills, or in a historic area like Midland or Gosnells, you can still find homes under $400k within 20km of the city.
Around Perth
If you’re looking for a quieter community, Western Australia has lots to offer beyond Perth. You can read more about moving to Margaret River or Busselton in our guides.

Cost of living
The cost of living in Perth is around $1,300 per person (not including rent), or a little under $5,000 for a family of four.
That’s around 15% lower than the cost of living in Sydney and 3% lower than in Melbourne. In other words, Perth is still an affordable place to live, with generous salaries and lower prices than other capital cities.
